Monday, October 8, 2007 – The island's Postmaster General is tackling head-on the problems associated with mail being returned to sender. Philomene St. Claire said some Saint Lucians fail to address their letters properly and because of this, letters never get to the people for who they are intended.

Miss St. Claire said a brochure, to show persons how exactly a letter should be addressed, has been put together to coincide with the observance of World Post day, today October 9th, 2007.

“When there is an error in an address of a letter, or if there is insufficient addressing, your letter may never be delivered or may be delivered very late, and there is nothing we can do about it. So we would like to highlight, especially, the proper addressing of letters. Simple but yet very crucial to the timely delivery of a letter. Your correspondents may send letter that is not to your correct mailing address and may address it to your home address and we know in Saint Lucia we do not have a home delivery and so we are employing our customers, whether you are the addressee or sender please pay attention to proper addressing,” the GPO Head said.

The Saint Lucia Postal Service, on this World Post Day to the theme “Stay Connected,” is putting on a mini-exhibition for the general public throughout this week, and will use that opportunity to distribute the brochures on proper letter addressing. The exercise to be held at the General Post Office in Castries will also see exhibits of commemorative and definitive stamps. Miss St. Claire said the initiative is geared towards getting the public more familiar with postal operations on the island.

She said, “It is not simply processing mail or selling of stamps as some people may believe. We do a lot more at the post office and would like to bring that public awareness to persons who would like to know more about our postal operations.”

The General Post Office has also launch its new website, www.stluciapo.org, to coincide with this year's celebrations of World Post Day.
