Monday, November 12, 2007 –The International Labour organisation (ILO) held a one day Tripartite Sensitization Workshop on "HIV AIDS and the World of Work" at the Bay Gardens Inn recently.
The fast Track approach to workplace action on HIV/AIDS seeks to use a modified and smaller-scaled version of the ILO/ United States Department of Labour process to workplace action.
Addressing the opening of the workshop, Labour Minister Honourable Edmund Estephane noted that HIV/AIDS continues to be a growing threat and stressed that there were several challenges facing its treatment.
“ The challenges for managing HIV and AIDS in Saint Lucia are complicated by factors such as the size of the population, land use, culture, religion and economics of the land. There is a profound negative stigma related to being HIV positive. In both the public and private sectors, individuals known to be HIV positive have a difficult time finding employment and will have a significantly higher risk of losing their job compared to a non HIV worker.” Minister Estephane told his audience.
Saint Lucia Dominica, Grenada and Saint Kitts and Nevis are the initial target countries. It is anticipated that HIV/AIDS workplace action would be initiated in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Antigua and Barbuda in 2008. |
