Monday, May 14, 2007 – Acting Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson
King, on the evening of Monday May 14, via a Statement put an end to public
speculation regarding the health of Prime Minister Sir John Compton. Sir John
has been admitted to a New York hospital since May 1st. Mr. King said further to
his initial statement on May 10th, that he was now in a position to provide
definitive information regarding the medical condition of the Prime Minister.
According to the Acting Prime Minister Stephenson King, “the results of medical
tests received on Sunday indicate that Sir John suffered a series of mini
strokes in Saint Lucia prior to his arrival in New York on May 1st. The results
also reveal that he suffered another stroke while under the care of the doctors,
who were conducting medical tests at the hospital that he has used for that
purpose for the last ten years.” Mr. King said Sir John's condition is stable
and he is able to speak. However Sir John has suffered some physical impairment
that will require him to undergo physiotherapy.
Lady Compton, according to the Acting Prime Minister is presently in
consultation with Sir John's doctors to determine the earliest time that Sir
John may be released from hospital. “The attention of the Cabinet of Ministers
is focused entirely on bringing Sir John home and on his full recovery.
Everything will be done to ensure that happens,” King added.
The Cabinet of Ministers has authorised the travel of Social Transformation
Minister and Deputy Political Leader of the United Workers Party Honourable
Leonard Montoute to New York to provide Lady Compton and her family with
whatever support is required. The Deputy Prime Minister has called for the
collective prayer and support of the nation on behalf of Sir John.
“This support and understanding, he said, is particularly important at this time
when the nation is clamouring for information about Sir John's condition. I know
that you appreciate that I must be careful that the information that I provide
to you is medically accurate and that Sir John's and his family's right to
privacy is respected.”
“At every stage I have consulted with Lady Compton and her concern has been to
ensure that any information that was released to the nation was confirmed by Sir
John's doctors, was medically conclusive and was not based on speculation,” Mr.
King added.
Mr. King gave the assurance that while “it was not easy for this Administration
to contend with
this totally unanticipated illness of our Leader,” the affairs of the country
were running smoothly and that everything is being put in place to implement the
vision for the development of the
nation that Sir John set out during the recent budget address.
