Tuesday, May 8, 2007 – “Polyclinic -Plus-Plus” - A term which may ring unfamiliar at this point will become clearly understood in the health sector and wider public, as plans for the Soufriere and Dennery hospitals begin to unfold during this financial year.

Health Minister Honourable Stephenson King has outlined plans that will address the current status of both institutions. “Under the strategic plan we consider that those two institutions should be set up at a level of what I call poly-clinics plus plus meaning a ploy clinic which provides a range of services, emergency services, large services etc. In the case of the Soufriere Hospital we need to provide the services of a “Hyperbaric Chamber” because of the activities which takes place, where there is a lot of diving taking place so that you can provide that kind of service to those individuals who suffer with the benz.”

Minister Kings explained that this financial year, government will be investing sizeable sums of money into enhancing the capacity of the hospital. “The government will be spending some $ 849,000.00 on the Soufriere Hospital, part of an overall figure of S1.08 million to rehabilitate the Soufriere Hospital so quite a bit will be happening in Soufriere, apart from your mini-stadia, the Soufriere hospital will be looked at. The Dennery hospital discussions will continue on the way forward for Dennery.”

The location of the Dennery Hospital has been debated for some time now, primary among concerns is the effect of the Atlantic sea blast on the hospital's equipment.
