Thursday, 10 May, 2007 - The Organization of American States (OAS), in
collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, will be hosting a
workshop from May 16 to 17, 2007 to review a multi-hazard contingency planning
manual for the Caribbean Tourism Sector.
The manual, which provides information on standard operating practices and
guidelines for preparing, responding and recovering from critical events
impacting the tourism industry, has been developed by the OAS and regional
stakeholders, including the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA)
and the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA).
The two-day workshop is being convened to share the results of the manual’s
development process and to engage in the practical application of its contents.
Commenting on this OAS sponsored event, the organization’s representative in St.
Lucia, Paul Spencer, stated that this activity is “most timely as it comes as
authorities in many Caribbean countries finalize their preparedness for the
annual hurricane season.” According to Spencer, it is yet another contribution
which the hemispheric organization is making to address the region’s development
needs.
The opening ceremony of the tourism multi-hazard workshop will be addressed by
St. Lucia’s Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Sen. the Hon. Allen
Chastanet, Mr. Spencer and a representative from CDERA. It will be held at the
Coco Palm Hotel, Rodney Bay, Wednesday May 16th, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
The media is invited to attend.
