Monday, March 19, 2007 – The St. Lucia Transport Board has collaborated with the St. Lucia Fire Service and the Royal St. Lucia Police Force's Traffic Department to implement an initiative that will provide easier access for emergency vehicles within the City of Castries.
The Fire and Ambulance Services has complained about the traffic congestion on certain routes within the city, considered to be high risk areas or priority routes for emergency purposes. The first phase of this initiative will see the establishment and enforcement of no parking zones on Peynier Street, Mary Ann Street, Micoud Street and part of John Compton Highway—between Jn. Baptiste and Jeremie Streets.
The Transport Board says the measure will remove congestion from the critical areas and expedite emergency traffic movement. It has appealed for the cooperation of the public in lending support to the initiative. The Board says it is cognizant that there will be conflicts and concerns from various quarters about the measure, but has called for good sense to prevail in the matter. As a result of the displacements the Transport Board has urged motorists to seek alternative and legal parking elsewhere. |
