Monday, March 19, 2007 – Preparations to host the National Community Foundation's Annual Telethon are already in full motion, one month before the staging of the event. The event, now into its 5th year, received its media launch last week at the NIC Conference Centre under the patronage of Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy.
Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy said such acts of selfless giving by the general public deserves commendation, and should be highlighted.
“Too often acts of lawlessness, violence and our inhumanity to each other make national headlines and give such a skewed image of ourselves to people. Initiatives like those undertaken by the Community Foundation however, gives us an opportunity to adjust that national portrait to reflect the generosity, the kindness and humanity of our people when they are called upon to lend a hand.”
Director of the NCF Ms. Jacintha Annius Lee says Saint Lucia is blessed with many caring and generous people who are helping the NCF to meet increasing demands for assistance.
“We are seeing more and more individuals coming to us for assistance . In fact so far this financial year - that is from August 06th 2006, to yesterday March 14th 2007 - we disbursed nearly four hundred thousand dollars. Our education and health focus areas continue to demand a great deal from us. We cannot deny children from disadvantaged families the opportunity to attend school.”
Other beneficiaries included persons in need of medical assistance, fire victims and older persons.
The media launch also saw the presentation of a cheque, valued at forty five thousand dollars, by main sponsor Digicel. The telethon will be held on April 15th. |
