Wednesday, March 28, 2007 – The Ministry of Education is presenting
another opportunity to the general public to buy locally produced items. A book
of recipes featuring the national fruit - the - banana will be launched Tuesday,
April 03rd.
The recipes feature the making of cakes, pies, party snacks and pastries giving
the book the kind of flexibility to be adapted to family meals or commercial
cooking, says Curriculum Specialist for Home Economics, Mary King.
She told the GIS the project was a long-standing dream, held back by lack of
sponsorship. The many original recipes were sourced from the 2005 Secondary
Schools Food Preparation Competition.
Mrs. King said the best recipes were selected, but only after they were tried
and tested and proven to be healthy and tasty.
“Tuesday 03rd April, will see the launching of the book of banana recipes,” Mrs
King said. “The interesting thing about this publication is that the recipes
were all produced and developed by students of secondary schools during the food
preparation competition. These banana recipes were developed in 2005 and they
are being published in a very colourful, very appealing book after almost two
years.”
The project has been sponsored by the Banana Industry Trust and the Office of
Private Sector Relations. Persons in the food sector - from housewives to
commercial establishments - are being asked to support the initiative.
“I am appealing to housewives, and food establishments to come and see for
themselves. Later on the book will be offered for sale at the different book
outlets.”
The book which will be retailed at thirty dollars is entitled “Banana Classic”
and contains over thirty recipes.
