Tuesday, March 20, 2007 – The Department of Gender Relations says it condemns any incidents surrounding the battering of women. The issue of the perpetration of violence against women grabbed very visible attention as a related incident reportedly occurred in full public view in Castries on Monday, March 19th.
Acting Director in the Department of Gender Relations Charms Gaspard said the public “must not fall asleep at the wheel” where domestic violence is concerned. Ms. Gaspard said the Women's Support Centre is available to help victims make informed decisions.
“Women who are victims of domestic violence, or domestic abuse can call our hotline number. The number is 202. You can get somebody to speak to on a 24 hour basis. You can speak about your problems, you can get some counselling advice, you can basically get ideas, get some information that can help you lead a different lifestyle.”
She continued: “Whether it happens in private or in public view, the incident should be treated just as seriously. It does not take away from the fact that it happens in the privacy of your home. It's an assault on a human being that should be dealt with swiftly by the law.” Women are reminded that jealous and possessive behaviour from partners, threats and accusations are all red flags that they should look out for. |
