Thursday, March 1, 2007 – The Cultural Development Foundation is making a special plea to local artistes to participate in the upcoming “Commonwealth Arts and Crafts Awards 2007.” Organised by the Commonwealth Foundation based in London in the United Kingdom the Awards is an excellent opportunity to develop new skills, gain international experience and share with other cultures.

The awards aim to increase mutual understanding between people from different cultures through artistic exchange and are part of the Culture and Diversity Programme of the Commonwealth Foundation.

Every two years the Commonwealth Arts and Crafts Awards enable promising artists and craftspeople from Commonwealth countries to spend time developing their art and sharing their practices in another Commonwealth country

The Awards are open to professional artists and craftspeople aged between 20 and 45 from Commonwealth countries. Up to ten Awards of up to eighty thousand pounds each will be given for residents between three and nine months.

More than 80 artists from over 30 countries have benefited from the Awards since they were established in 1987.

The Commonwealth Foundation is an inter-governmental organisation resourced by and reporting to Commonwealth governments.

It works to enhance the role of civil society organisations in governance, democracy, sustainable development and culture and diversity by strengthening their institutional and human capacity and creating opportunities and space for partnership, participation, advice and leadership.

The Foundation was established by Commonwealth governments in 1965 and is guided by the principles, values and priorities of the Commonwealth.
