Thursday, June 21, 2007 – Puerto Rico is eager to broaden its interests in the sub-region and build on its signed Memorandum of Understanding MOU with the OECS Secretariat.

Puerto Rico continued to demonstrate their intentions to build sustainable relations at the OECS Heads Meeting, in Grenada, in May, where Puerto Rico made a special presentation.

Senior Communications Officer of the OECS Secretariat Kendol Morgan says the OECS is also keen to broaden relations in the wider Caribbean.

''The issue of sea transportation, that was one area in which the Puerto Ricans were willing to collaborate with the OECS countries but they also looked at support in trade, in investment and tourism opportunities in the provision of scholarships to be people of the Eastern Caribbean and interestingly to try to be part of the OECS pharmaceutical procurement service programme through which the OECS pulls their resources to purchase pharmaceuticals from around the world”

Mr. Morgan says Puerto Rico believes they can provide more cost effective supplies of pharmaceuticals to the region. Although not a member of CARICOM the MOU signed about two years ago facilitates closer collaboration between Puerto Rico and the OECS in the promotion of trade, investment and tourism. Last year the OECS along with Puerto Rican support, opened an office in that country, hoping it will become the centre of transactions with that nation.
