Wednesday, June 20, 2007 – The Victoria Hospital will soon be presented
with new ophthalmic equipment from the regional and international partners of
the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association. The handing over is formally set for
June 27th.
Mr. Anthony Avril, Executive Director of the Association said the gesture is as
a result of the government's signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the
Association in 2004.
“The Caribbean Council for the Blind supported the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare
Association with support of course from Sight Savers International and other
agencies and they have committed themselves to supplying ophthalmic equipment to
the Victoria Hospital in order to strengthen the eye programme at that health
institution and also the national eye programme in Saint Lucia”.
Mr. Avril says it brings satisfaction to know that the hospital's service
delivery will be strengthened, thus ensuring better public care in that unit.
“On Wednesday the 27th, Mr. Arvel Grant who is the Executive Director of the
Caribbean Council for the Blind, will be accompanied by Dr. Juan Carlos Silver
who is the consultant to PAHO and WHO. They are spending one day in Saint Lucia
and during their stay they will be presenting diagnostic, surgical equipment as
well as medical consumables.”
Meantime the government of Cuba has pledged to assist in the establishment of a
state of the art regional eye centre facility in Saint Lucia.
