Monday, June 11, 2007 – The Pitons Management Area is approaching its
third year of enlistment as a World Heritage Site.
The site, comprising 2,909 hectares of land was enlisted on June 30 2004 and
received it's inscription on February 14th 2005. General Manager of the Pitons
Management Area Henix Joseph says an “Integrated Development Plan” for the area
is being developed.
“ That plan is going to look at the whole question of development in Soufriere.
Some things that would be permitted and would not be permitted. If you are going
to allow development what type of development you are going to allow because
given that we are a natural site and we talk about superlative natural beauty ,
we ought to be very careful as to what is permitted and what is not permitted, ”
said Manager of the Pitons Management Henix Joseph
Joseph further stated that with World heritage status the value of land
in the area appreciated tremendously resulting in a number of persons trying to
capitalise on its increased value.
“ They are trying to sell land at exorbitant prices and to put all kinds of
development, but the government has taken a position, cabinet has in fact taken
a position that no development should take place there pending the completion of
this study,” Joseph added.
