The Acting Prime Minister led a 7 member St. Lucia delegation comprising public and private sector officials to the Conference on the Caribbean, a series of Government-to-Government, Government-to-People, and People-to-People meetings focusing on CARICOM and its relations with the USA.

The meetings examined the status of US/CARICOM relations, and explored avenues for bringing about improvements in the relationship between the two sides.

During the course of the week-long conference the Acting Prime Minister was involved in a series of separate meetings with the US President George W. Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Chairman of the Congressional Ways and Means Committee Charles Rangel, and members of the Congressional Black Caucus, among others.

The meetings covered a wide range of issues including, but not limited to the need for renewed and enhanced trade preferences for CARICOM Countries, US support for the integration process within CARICOM, the question of criminal deportees, assistance in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and development support for Haiti.

While in Washington Mr. King also undertook the signing of an Agreement between St. Lucia and the World Bank in respect of a project for the development of skills within the OECS. The project is entitled OECS Skills for Inclusive Growth Project.

He also took the opportunity to hold meetings with the staff of St. Lucia’s Embassy in Washington, and members of the St. Lucian Community.

The Acting Prime Minister’s delegation included among others, Honourable Guy Mayers, Minister for Trade, Industry and Commerce, and Ambassador Anthony Severin, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.
