Wednesday, July 11, 2007 – The Ministry of Social Transformation, Human
Services, Family Affairs, Youth and Sports has organized a summer programme for
young people from the Eastern part of the island.
The communities involved are the Mabouya Valley, Dennery Village, Mon Repos and
Micoud. The program which will run from the 18th to the 27th of July at the
Clendon Mason Secondary School, specifically targets participants between the
ages of nine to fifteen.
Claudia Noel Jn. Baptiste, who is the Youth and Sports Officer for Mon Repos and
Dennery, said the main objective of the camp is to provide avenues for youth to
participate in meaningful activities during the Summer holidays.
“ We realize that during the holidays we have young persons roaming the streets,
and what we have realized is that they find themselves in trouble. We also want
to continue building the foundation for youth and sports development in the
eastern region since we know we have so much talent in that area,” Jn.Baptiste
added.
The summer program also aims to develop the physical, social, and creative
skills of the participants, and will engage them in several sessions on HIV/
AIDS education, nutrition, leadership, dance and drama, information technology
and sports.
The students will also be taken on an island tour dubbed 'know your island.'
Registration forms for the Eastern Summer Youth Program may be obtained from
schools in the districts or from the Youth and Sports Officer.
