Tuesday, January 16, 2007 – Dr. Nicholas Frederick, former permanent
secretary in the Ministry of Education and former principal of the Sir Arthur
Lewis Community College, is St. Lucia's new Minister for Justice and Attorney
General.
Dr. Frederick who is now an Attorney at Law, was sworn in by Her Excellency,
Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy on Monday January 15th, at Government
House.
Dr. Frederick's role as Attorney General is principally as an advisor to
government on legal issues, ensuring that government is provided with the best
legal service.
As Minister for justice, he will have oversight of the magistracy, the high
court and the supreme court among other responsibilities.
The dual role Minister has already identified some areas needing urgent
attention. These include problems of congestion at the prisons, strengthening
the crown prosecution and forensic services, and expediting the work of the
magistracy.
Dr. Frederick also promised to give attention to institutionalizing legal aid
and fast tracking the mediation system, which is still in at an experimental
stage.
