Thursday, January 18, 2007 – The Government of Saint Lucia is
concerned about the unprecedented level of cost overruns and implementation
delays associated with a number of projects.
In some instances these cost overruns exceed the original cost of the project by
over one hundred percent (100%).
In addition, there have been numerous allegations of financial irregularities
which raise concerns as to whether the Government is obtaining value for money.
In view of this, Cabinet has decided to commission an audit into certain
Ministries and Statutory Boards where these irregularities appear to be most
glaring.
The first audit will commence with the Ministry of Communications, Works and
Transport and a number of subsidiary companies created under this Ministry.
Further, action will be taken depending on the findings of the team.
The audit will be carried out by a team of qualified persons drawn from both
public and private sectors and will comprise accountants and other technical and
professional experts in the field of engineering and computer science.
The team will also have the authority to consult with and seek the assistance of
other specialists and professionals as they see fit.
The full scope and priority of work will be determined by the Director of
Finance in consultation with the Ministry of Finance.
