Friday, February 23, 2007 – The education system must continue to play
a pivotal role in instilling nationalism in the youth. So says Minister in the
Ministry of Education and Culture Senator Honourable Gaspard Charlemagne. He
says this is one avenue that will help to nurture and sustain a deeper feeling
of patriotism amongst Saint Lucia's youth.
Patriotism among the general citizenry is said to have been dwindling steadily
in recent times. Minister Charlemagne says school based activities can go a long
way in revitalizing patriotic feelings.
“ I am quite aware that students need to identify with some of the national and
cultural activities we have off and on, but on the whole I think what can happen
is that you can have a curriculum that includes certain aspects of national
development, certain aspects of national festivities.”
One of the highlights of the island's 28th Anniversary of Independence on
February 22nd was the National Youth Rally where students made cultural
presentations to an audience of dignitaries and their peers.
