Wednesday, February 7, 2007 – On Tuesday 13th February, the National
Community Foundation – NCF - will host the fourth Chess Open Day and Mini
Tournament at the Saint Joseph's Convent Secondary School, from 1 pm.
Chess activities in schools have gained momentum since the implementation of the
project at the request of a donor to the National Community Foundation.
Executive Director of the NCF Ms. Jacintha Annius Lee says this is one of
several school based events since the launch of the project in 2005.
“We are inviting all schools that are participating in the chess project to be
part of this activity. I want also, to extend an invitation to interested
parents. In addition, we have invited officials from the Ministry of Health, and
the Ministry of Education and Sports,” Miss Lee said.
Thus far, there have been three open days and hundreds of students and their
teachers and parents have participated in those friendly matches.
The open days are designed to heighten awareness of the game. So far some 22
schools have come on board and benefited from periodic training seminars
including a a visit by the Caribbean representative of the World Chess
Federation.
