Friday, February 9, 2007 – The planning process for the observance of
the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade has been
set in motion at a meeting on Friday, February 09th, conducted by the History
Expert Committee chaired by Minister for Foreign Affairs Honourable Rufus
Bousquet,
The Minister imparted his perspective on the impact and legacy of slavery to the
team of persons charged with designing the programme of activities for the
national observance on March 25th.
“In our own minds, we should be thinking in the course of putting together this
programme, ways of sensitizing people,” the minister said, “because I think a
lot of the people who are affected by some of the the legacies of slavery do not
really understand that they are actually affected by it. It is my view that we
speak of an event, but are we doing anything to make people understand why they
need to appreciate history?”
The Saint Lucia Historical and Archaeological Society has been asked to
implement the national programme but there is to be the sharing of
responsibilities among other agencies.
Some of the activities under consideration include lectures, panel discussions,
theatrical and animation performances as well as military performances. The
committee comprises Dr. Michael Louis, historian and author, Michael Aubertin,
historian and author, Executive Director of the FRC, Kennedy Samuel, Eric
Branford, archaeologist /historian, Robert Harvey, lecturer/ historian and
Delthia Mathurin, historian and teacher.
