Wednesday, April 18, 2007 – Activities to mark National Youth Month
under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Transformation, Youth and Sports
are off to a good start. Youth Month opened with an Ecumenical Service on
Tuesday, April 03rd, setting the tone for what officials hope will be 'a
purposeful and serious celebration' of young people's achievements.
Youth and Sports Officer Magaret Deterville, coordinator of the official
Programme of Activities said the Ministry is anticipating a successful outcome.
“In order for the programme of activities to be successful the Ministry has
collaborated with various youth and sports councils throughout Saint Lucia.
These youth and sports councils are the ones that nominated the various persons
for the various categories for the awards to be received at the Youth Awards
Ceremony on Sunday the 29th. In addition to that the ministry has collaborated
with clubs, and student councils from the various schools. They have also made
submissions and are the ones participating in the National Youth Parliament on
May, 08th.”
In the course of this week many young persons have already begun benefiting from
several self development workshops.
There are various activities. Among them are the Young Entrepreneurs Forum,
which started on the 17th of April and will culminated on the 19th of April.
This activity is took place at the Clendon Mason Memorial School in Dennery. The
National Youth Awards ceremony will take place on the 29th of April at the
Gaiety at Rodney Bay. This will see the presentation of awards to several young
persons. These include Outstanding Youth in Entrepreneurship, Outstanding
Student Leader, Outstanding Youth in Arts and Culture, Outstanding Youth in
Social Development, Outstanding Youth Club and Outstanding Youth and Sports
Council”.
The Wayne Louis Award for Excellence, previously referred to as the Youth of the
Year Award, will also be presented to a deserving young person.”
The Theme for the month long celebrations is “Preparing our youth for the global
challenges”.
