Tuesday, April 24, 2007 Security has been beefed up here ahead of
the semi-final clash between South Africa and defending champions Australia in
the International Cricket Council's Cricket World Cup, scheduled for April 25,
2007 at the
Beausejour Cricket Ground in Saint Lucia.
With many more patrons expected for the semi-final match on Wednesday a number
of troops from the Regional security System (RSS) have arrived to ensure safety
requirements for the staging of such an event is not compromised.
Our operations are going to take us across the length and breath of Saint
Lucia, said Head of Operations, Commander Wyke. We will be concentrating mainly
on the areas that the activities in terms of persons in and around the stadium
is concerned and of course the tourist areas. We don't want too much camouflage
around the tourists, so that will be more or less the police in the joint task
force will be using the capacities and of course the CARICOM arm band designates
the people from the joint task force.
The Task Force comprising South African security personnel will work along with
their Saint Lucian counterparts in providing security for both land and sea.
The South Africans bring specialist skills to the force in areas such as bomb
detection and crime scene investigation, Commander Hyke said.
Commander Wyke said the experience of the World Cup has been beneficial and will
serve regional security personnel in good stead for the future. He urged Saint
Lucians to see the RSS as a friend in their midst.
I would like to say to the public of Saint Lucia please rest comfortably. We
are here to assist with your security as you see our guys, interact with them,
we are all Caribbean people and of course cricket is our thing.
