Tuesday, April 24, 2007 – A landslide mitigation project will benefit residents of Morne Du Don who live in an unplanned settlement. Minister for Housing Honourable Richard Frederick said an intervention has been activated to alleviate the problem and safeguard the community.

More than that, the minister said the location in question, known as the Walcott Lands, should be looked at with a view to allowing residents to own the lands. “I have undertaken to cause a landslide mitigation project to be implemented that will entail the building of drains, gabion baskets and even putting guttering for some houses to direct the flow of water. Some of the people who reside on that land are very old and have been on those lands for than 50 years. I have promised that upon acquisition of those lands, we as a government cannot afford to give those old people the little piece of two by four lands on which they have lived all their lives for nothing, we will therefore provide the land to them for next to nothing.”

Parliamentary representative for Castries Central and Minister for Housing, Urban Redevelopment and Local Government, Honourable Richard Frederick, made those remarks on Monday April 23rd, 2007, during his budget presentation.

Tuesday April 24 is the final day of debate on the 2007/2008 Budget.
