Monday, April 2, 2007 – The Saint Lucia Fire and Emergency Services
has conducted an analysis of its tour of duty over the period March 14th to 24th
when Saint Lucia hosted Group C matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup
preliminaries.
Chief Fire Officer Leslie Fontenelle says systems run smoothly for his personnel
confirming that the training and other measures which had been put in place well
in advance, had been adequate.
“We had been on standby a couple days before the games began, to cover the
arrival of the officials and players, VIP's included. We also provided standby
on the grounds. We had about 16 medical staff at the ground on a typical day
between for and 4 a.m. and 7 p.m. Fifty (50) officers would make preliminary
checks before the games begun to ensure that the grounds were safe.”
Mr. Fontenelle says the local unit was backed up by Martiniquan counterparts and
that arrangement will also be in effect for the semi-final match on April 25th.
“Because we expected a large turn out on the 16th of March, we had support from
our Martiniquan counterparts who provided emergency response via helicopter. In
the event any player was severely injured, we would have them flown off to
martinique if the locals on the ground were not able to assist.”
The Fire and Emergency Services is now anticipating the semi-final which is
expected to attract a maximum capacity crowd.
“We will have 16 EMT personnel with five ambulance within the grounds, we'll
have a support team at the Gros Islet Fire Station, a search and rescue team and
external support from the Martinique Military and Fire Department,” Fontenelle
said.
