Friday, November 17, 2006 – St. Lucia will go to the polls on December 11th, 2006. This date was announced by Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony Thursday November 16th at a public meeting at the Market Steps.

Speaking to supporters in the heart of the capital, with a school bell in hand, Dr. Anthony said Nomination Day will be on November 30th, 2006.

This means that electors will have a space of three weeks before the Election Day. The Prime Minister also said that Parliament will be dissolved on Friday November 17th, 2006.

The elections will be a straight fight between the ruling SLP and the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) led by former Prime Minister Sir John Compton. The SLP Government, which is seeking a third term in office currently hold 13 seats in Parliament, while the UWP holds three. There is one independent parliamentarian.

The Electoral Commission at a recent press conference announced that it was ready for the polls and that 135,958 persons had been registered, an increase of 14,599 electors over the 2001 figure.
