Wednesday, November 1, 2006 – A call has come from outgoing Member of
Parliament for Laborie Honourable Velon John, for more to be done to save the
nation's youth from crime. Addressing his colleague parliamentarians at a recent
House of Assembly meeting Mr. John said a new relationship needed to be
established between the home, school, clergy and government.
“It is only in so doing,” he said, “that we can save a generation of youth that
presently sits on the school benches of this country. And if we fail Mr.
Speaker, as we are already failing, we shall witness an endless and relentless
stream of young persons resolutely marching into the arena of crime and violence
as this millennium passes us by.”
Mr. John further suggested the establishment of a juvenile complex staffed with
qualified personnel and requisite facilities. This he said was important and
must be given priority, as parenting was too serious a responsibility to be left
only to parents.
Mr. John said, “What must be pellucidly understood Mr. Speaker, is that we
should not only look at the climate of crime, we must focus intently on the
climate for crime.”
Mr. John's comments came out of his presentation on the Praedial Larceny Bill
which was passed in Parliament on Tuesday October 24th, 2006.
