Contact: Prime Minister's Press Secretary

Friday, January, 6, 2006 - The Government of Saint Lucia wishes to reiterate that it is working speedily and resolutely toward full participation in the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME).

The legislation to give full expression to the CSME through the elimination of discrimination between Saint Lucians and other CARICOM nationals is currently before Parliament for consideration and has already gone through its First Reading.

Bearing in mind the concerns which have been expressed by the OECS, Saint Lucia will be working very closely with the other members of the Organisation to ensure that those concerns are adequately addressed prior to full accession to the CSME.

While the legislative process is yet to be completed, the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia will be attending the signing ceremony formalising the establishment of the CSME later this month in Jamaica.

The Prime Minister’s attendance is intended to serve as a clear statement of Saint Lucia’s commitment.
