Yachts to Race for PM's Cup on Independence Day |
Contact: Prime Minister's Press Secretary Monday, February 20 ,2006 - This year’s Independence Day celebrations will feature an additional calendar activity that has the St. Lucia Yacht Club (SLYC) and the Marine Industries Association of St. Lucia (MIASL) teaming-up to stage a sailing regatta in and around the waters of Rodney Bay. The main event of the regatta will be the race to Anse Cochon by the “Big Boats” for the Prime Minister’s Cup. To date fifteen (15) boats have expressed their intention to participate in the race, which will start at the St. Lucia Yacht Club at 9.30am on Independence Day (February 22) and will sail the 20-mile course to Anse Cochon and back. The organisers say that with the wind blowing around 20knots, the course should be completed in five hours by the faster boats. During the race for the Prime Minister's Cup, Rodney Bay will be a hive of sailing activities which will include J24’s, Lasers and Optimists. The J24’s will be involved in races on courses prepared to show-off the skills of experienced racing crews as they pit their wits against each other. The Lasers and Optimists will also be racing, but will be skippered by the upcoming young sailors of St. Lucia, who have been trained by the sailing team of Doctors Michael Camps and Brigette Schuling. The climax of the day’s sailing will be a prize-giving ceremony slated for 4.30 pm at the St. Lucia Yacht Club, where Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony will present the Prime Minister’s Cup to the winning Big Boat. Prizes to winners and competitors will also be presented to participants and plans for next year’s Prime Minister’s Cup will be unveiled. |
