Wednesday, April 12, 2006 – The Council Of and For Older Persons is hoping that Saint Lucia will join many other countries in marking the 15th of June this year as “Prevention of Elderly Abuse Day.”

The Council Of and For Older Persons is said to be working steadily towards building local support and interest in the international observance which has been designated by the United Nations.

Executive Director of the Council Ms. Helen Charles said the idea has been discussed on a regional scale and now all the interested parties have to do is to get their countries meaningfully involved in staging a programme of activities for the day.

“ What we have done so far is to write to all groups and organizations that are dealing with older persons to sensitize them into observing that day. We have written to the different ministries for their support and this is where we are at so far. After the Senior Games we are planning to have a meeting somewhere near the end of April to put things in motion so that day can be successful.”

Ms. Charles says in the months leading up to the June observance the Council will embark upon awareness activities on the issues of abuse and neglect of the elderly in an effort to discourage the society as a whole from allowing such situations to persist without their intervention.
