Wednesday, October 05, 2005 - The Annual World Mental Health Day observance will be held in Saint Lucia on Monday October 10th, 2005. The theme “Mental and Physical Health across the lifespan” was chosen by the World Federation for mental health to create public awareness on the critical relationship between physical and mental health and well being at every stage of life.

The Federation stated “neglecting the health and wellness of any segment of the population whether children, working adults, or elders, leads to major human and social welfare problems for entire nations.”

According to Jennifer Joseph of the Mental Health Association of Saint Lucia, the first activity takes the form of a sensitization workshop for kindergarten school teachers. “The one day workshop scheduled for the Auberge Seraphine Hotel hopes to enable Kindergarten teachers in the primary school system to gain increased understanding and skills around a wide range of emotional and mental health issues experienced by young children.”

In addition the Mental Health Association will be collaborating with the Ministry of Health in presenting a two hour session for senior managers within the private and public sectors. The programme will introduce participants to mental health issues and why they matter in the workplace. “And finally an evening lecture on the topic “Ageing and Health : How Living affects Mental and Physical Health.” Ms. Joseph added.
