Wednesday, October 26, 2005 - After two years of collaboration and
hard work the Emergency Services in Saint Lucia are finally ready to seek
dialogue with Society on the increasing numbers of Massive Events that are
taking
place in the Country.
"Though an entertainment event is obviously a business venture; the public's
safety must be objective number 1 at any Mass Event." The Director of NEMO Dawn
French points out. "Holding Shows where thousands are expected and there is no
back up from either Police, Fire, Hospital or even a volunteer organisation like
the Saint Lucia Red Cross must become a thing of the past." She continued. "So
easily a fun time can turn deadly."
Titled "Mass Crowd Events Policies and Guidelines" The document was deemed ready
for comment by the Steering Committee on October 24, 2005.
Through the Secretariat of the National Emergency Management Organisation the
document has begun to circulated and comments collected. Presenly the
document may be downloaded from the Government of Saint Lucia Website at
http://stlucia.gov.lc/docs/nemo/MassCrowds.pdf.
In the comming months taking us into 2006 a number of meetings shall be held to
solicit the thoughts of all. Plans are underway to start with the Schools
of Saint Lucia as the Guidelines make no exceptions.
So far the model has been adopted by the Saint Lucia Tourist Board for the 2005
Jazz Fesitval, Radio Saint Lucia for Sparrow Gold, Saint Lucia Arts Inc. for the
Heinkien Kalalu World Music Festival and talks are underway with the Roman
Catholic Church for its Annual Youth Rally.
