Thursday , 24 November 2005 - The National Emergency Management
Organisation NEMO will be represented by the Director of NEMO Miss. Dawn French
at an International Conference set for Friday December 2nd, entitled “Improving
national and regional disaster response capacity.” Saint Lucia’s participation
is being facilitated by the British High Commission.
The conference will focus on the disaster response capacity of developing
countries which are prone to natural disasters. It will identify appropriate
preparedness and response systems.
The December 2nd meeting will discuss “What lessons can be learnt from recent
disasters such as the Tsunami in Asia or the Bam earthquake in Iran?; What
should a national response system consist of? ; How can legislation and
institutional reform be achieved?; How can national plans be implemented
effectively at the local level? And what role can NGOs play?
At the end of the conference there will be a field visit to experience local
disaster response planning in the UK context.
The conference is one of six, which takes place annually on different topics
known as the Wilton Park Conferences. The Wilton Park Conferences take place at
Wilton House in Steyning, West Sussex.
