Thursday , 24 November 2005 - The National Emergency Management Organisation NEMO will be represented by the Director of NEMO Miss. Dawn French at an International Conference set for Friday December 2nd, entitled “Improving national and regional disaster response capacity.” Saint Lucia’s participation is being facilitated by the British High Commission.

The conference will focus on the disaster response capacity of developing countries which are prone to natural disasters. It will identify appropriate preparedness and response systems.

The December 2nd meeting will discuss “What lessons can be learnt from recent disasters such as the Tsunami in Asia or the Bam earthquake in Iran?; What should a national response system consist of? ; How can legislation and institutional reform be achieved?; How can national plans be implemented effectively at the local level? And what role can NGOs play?

At the end of the conference there will be a field visit to experience local disaster response planning in the UK context.

The conference is one of six, which takes place annually on different topics known as the Wilton Park Conferences. The Wilton Park Conferences take place at Wilton House in Steyning, West Sussex.
