Thursday, November 24, 2005Last month the Member Agencies of NEMO Completed the DRAFT Guidelines for Mass Events in Saint Lucia. The intension was to engage the society in discussion on the precautions to be in place when planning an event guaranteed to attract thousands.

With the Christmas Season upon us the Member Agencies of NEMO find themselves with the opportunity to test the protocols even before the schedule of consultations start in 2006.

The schedule below gives a picture of the number of events to take place in December and the logistics involved with ensuring a safe event.

The Health Sector shall be the one to feel the strain of these events,” Dawn French – Director NEMO pointed out, “there are at least two weekends where multiple events are to take place. Each show expecting any where from two to five thousand persons...” She continued, “...and while these events unfold the regular calls from the general public must answered.”

Presently organizers of such events are being invited to meet the planning committee, that consists of :

  1. Saint Lucia Fire Service

  2. Royal Saint Lucia Police Force

  3. Saint Lucia Red Cross

  4. St John’s Ambulance Brigade

  5. Environmental Health Department / Ministry of Health

  6. Office of the Chief Medical Officer / Ministry of Health

  7. Electrical Department / Ministry of Works

  8. Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority

  9. NEMO Secretariat

After the consultations of 2006 all events will be required to meet with the Team. The first group to be consulted in 2006 shall be the Educational Instructions. In the meantime the Team shall seek collaboration with the Ministry of Physical Development to ensure that new venues designed to hold thousands meet the standards of the country.
