Monday, May 30, 2005 – Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, International Financial Services, Economic Affairs and Information Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony will deliver the feature address and officially declare open the newly-constructed south-west coast road, on Wednesday June 8th 2005. The ceremony will be held in La Fargue, and scheduled to start at 4.00 p.m.

Also expected to deliver addresses are the Minister for Communications Works, Transport and Public Utilities Hon. Felix Finistere and the Minister for Physical Development Environment and Housing Hon. Fergusson John.

The south-west coast road was one of the major road construction projects undertaken by the Government of Saint Lucia in an attempt to enhance communications throughout the island and provide the necessary infrastructure for the expansion of the agriculture, tourism and services sectors.

At present, rehabilitation works are underway on the east coast highway, which links the capital city, Castries, to the eastern and southern communities on the island.

In his budget presentation in April this year, Prime Minister Anthony said “Phase two (2) of the rehabilitation of the East Coast Road entails the reconstruction of 29.68 km of road from Castries to Praslin (excluding the 5km currently being addressed) and is estimated at EC$35.38 million. Phase three (3), covers Praslin to Vieux-Fort and is estimated at EC$26.3 million. This phase will commence in the Financial Year 2006/07.”

The Ministry of Communications Works, Transport and Public Utilities is at present working on new designs for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the Castries-Gros Islet highway.
