Thursday, March 03, 2005 - The long-awaited rehabilitation works have
commenced on the East Coast highway.
The first phase of the road works, which have been delayed by excessive climate
change, commenced yesterday at the Grand Riviere Bridge and will continue to
Fond d’Or in Dennery.
The contract for the works has been awarded to C.O. Williams and Company, a
well-known construction firm in St. Lucia.
The second phase of the rehabilitation work on the East Coast Highway will
commence later this year and that will be from Cul de Sac, all the way to the
Grand Riviere Bridge, with other sections to follow.
Meanwhile, the Government of St. Lucia wishes to advise and urge motorists and
pedestrians in particular, and members of the public in general, to be patient
as the rehabilitation works will cause inevitable slow-downs in traffic.
Most of the delay is expected to be in the area between Grand Riviere and La
Caye and motorists are urged to bear with the inevitable irritations, bearing in
mind that when the project is over, the East Coast Highway will, like that from
Vieux Fort to Soufriere, be a stretch of road for St. Lucians to be proud of.
