Wednesday, March 2, 2005 - The Ministry of Agriculture is working along
with the St. Lucia Coconut Growers Association to address a mite infestation of
coconut trees. The problem, which was discovered last year is said to be
impacting negatively on production.
Chairman of the Association, Ezekiel Joseph said the height of the trees was
making it difficult to undertake any meaningful spraying program: “We are still
awaiting the ministry as to possible solutions to that situation. But also, as
part of our five year strategic plan, we believe the time has come as an
association to work hand in hand with government to undertake a rehabilitation
program, because the last time we had a program like that was 30years ago”.
Mr. Joseph added that remedying the mite infestation problem was imperative,
particularly as the association was seeking to diversify into new products.
