Tuesday, June 28, 2005 - The inaugural Caribbean Community (CARICOM) 10k Road Race will be launched on the morning of Sunday, July 3rd 2005. The event takes place hours prior to the official opening ceremony for the 26th Heads of Government Conference carded for the Sandals Grande Resort and Spa on the Pigeon Island Causeway.

The race is open to males and females and will include professionals and amateur athletes from across the region and CARICOM nationals residing overseas. CARICOM Secretary General His Excellency Edwin Carrington told journalists at a media clinic on Friday June 24th , the road race, stretching from Volney’s Gas Station in Reduit and ending at the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) Headquarters on the Waterfront in the capital Castries, “was just one way the Caribbean Community was seeking to encourage CARICOM nationals to use physical activity and sport to promote healthy lifestyles, peace and co-operation.”

The race will become an annual event and will take place in the Member-State hosting the regular meeting. Prizes will be awarded to the top six in each category with the top prize in each category being US$1000 dollars and a winners’ trophy. Special prizes will also be awarded to participating students.

Registration forms can be downloaded from the CARICOM website at www.caricom.org or from athletic associations in Member-States. Completed forms can be sent to the various athletic associations or to Ministries of Sports in the region.
