Tuesday, July 05, 2005 - The 26th Conference of Heads of Government of
CARICOM has recognized the achievements of Caribbean youth in the reflection of
positive developments in the region.
Addressing the opening of the Conference of Heads of Government in Saint Lucia,
Secretary General of the Caribbean Community His Excellency Edwin Carrington
spoke of the importance of the role of Caribbean youth in the development of the
region and “recognise their achievements in placing the community on the highest
echelons of world endeavours.”
Singling out the achievements of three Caribbean athletes Jamaicans Asafa Powell
and Miss Veronica Campbell and batting sensation Trinidadian Brian Lara for
achieving feats of excellence denoting brilliance in Caribbean youth
achievements.
Mr. Asafa Powell is the world’s fastest man he holds the world record for the
100 meters, Miss Campbell is an Olympic gold medallist and Brian Lara holds the
highest run scoring record and the most centuries in test cricket. Lara is the
only cricketer in the history of the game to set the world record twice for a
test innings and to have the highest score ever by anyone in a first class
innings five hundred and one.
