Tuesday, July 05, 2005 - Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony has once again spoken forcefully on the issue of crime and security within CARICOM member states.

Speaking at the Opening of the 26th CARICOM Summit on Sunday, July 03rd Dr. Anthony says St. Lucia welcomes the recent proposals made by Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Honourable Patrick Manning to deal with escalating criminality in the region. Mr. Manning has lead responsibility for Crime and Security in CARICOM.

Prime Minister Anthony told his CARICOM colleagues, the unprecedented incidents of violence, criminality and inhumanity may have outgrown the tried and tested measures which worked in the past.

“We will have to define and implement new radical responses. In some areas zero tolerance measures will have to be contemplated. There needs to be a garnering of forces and a commonality of purpose when dealing with persistent criminality. Under no circumstances would we wish to see criminal activity robbing us of our cherished personal freedoms and liberties”.

As arrangements for the economic unification of CARICOM continue to advance Prime Minister Anthony who has lead responsibility for governance and justice says the scourge of crime has a real and present potential to sabotage the Caribbean’s path to progress.
