Tuesday, July 05, 2005 - The 26th Conference of Heads of Government of
CARICOM has recognized the achievements of Caribbean youth as a reflection of
positive developments in the region.
Addressing the opening of the Conference of Heads of Government in Saint Lucia,
Secretary General of the Caribbean Community, His Excellency Edwin Carrington
spoke of the importance of the role of Caribbean youth in the development of the
region and recognised their achievements in placing the community on the highest
echelons of world endeavours.
Three Caribbean athletes, Jamaicans Asafa Powell and Veronica Campbell, and
batting sensation Trinidadian Brian Lara were singled out for achieving feats of
excellence denoting brilliance in Caribbean youth achievements.
Mr Asafa Powell is the world’s fastest man; he holds the world record for the
100 meters.
Campbell is an Olympic gold medallist.
Brian Lara is the third highest runs scorer in the history of test cricket; he
is the only cricketer in the history of the game to set the world record twice
for runs in a test innings. Lara also holds the record for the highest score of
501 in a first class innings.
