Monday, December 19, 2005 - Parliamentary Representative for Vieux Fort South, Prime Minister Dr Kenny D. Anthony, over the weekend presented a brand new vehicle to be used to transport elderly citizens of the constituency to hospital and back.

Presenting the vehicle at a special lunch for the elderly held at the Vieux Fort Primary School on Saturday (17th December 2005), the Prime Minister said it took four years to raise funds for the vehicle, and by presenting it, he was delighted to have been able to deliver on a promise he made to the constituents during the December 2001 General Elections.

Dr Anthony said the vehicle, a 14-seat Nissan Urvan, will now be handed over to the Vieux Fort Town Council, “to be managed and maintained to provide this vital service to the elderly of the constituency.”

He emphasised, however, that “absolutely no expenses for maintenance of the vehicle will be borne by the Government of St. Lucia.” The Prime Minister pointed out to the audience of elderly persons that it was “not a vehicle only for those elderly persons who support the St. Lucia Labour Party, but for all the elderly persons of Vieux Fort, whether they are SLP or UWP supporters.”

“Indeed,” he explained, “it is precisely for this reason that the vehicle was being handed over to the Vieux Fort Town Council.”

It is expected that the shuttle will become operational in early January.
