Cuba - Saint Lucia Eye Care Collaboration to bring Relief to Patients |
Contact: Claudia Monlouis Tuesday, August 09, 2005 - Minister for Health Honourable Damian Greaves has expressed his Ministry’s satisfaction with the implementation of the St. Lucia / Cuba Eye Care Collaboration. The programme which begins later this month will address some urgent medical needs of blind and vision impaired persons, some of whom will be referred to Cuban hospitals. In October 2004 the Ministry of Health and the Blind Welfare Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding, indicating the willingness of both parties to work closely on similar priorities. The Minister says the Association is a partner in the programme. “The St. Lucia Blind Welfare Association already has cases and therefore they can present those cases to us and we can deal with it. What we are doing now is to put the programme together in every district”. Meantime Director of the Blind Welfare Association Mr. Anthony Avril says the Sans Souci office has received numerous calls from the public enquiring about the upcoming eye care programme. “We from the St. Lucia Blind Welfare Association certainly are responding in a favourable manner to the initiative being taken by Cuba and Venezuela, particularly for persons who would have difficulty in paying for the surgery.” He said there was a long waiting list of eye patients including children who hope to become recipients of eye care in Cuba. |
