Monday, September 20, 2004 - The St. Lucia Fire Service has captured the
first ever Caribbean Association of Firefighters Clico Goodwill Games title.
Fire fighting teams from Dominica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago were here
over the weekend, to participate in the friendly competition, and to join in
recognising the achievement of servicemen and women, as they were awarded at the
Banquet and Awards Night, held under the patronage of Her Excellency Governor
General Dame Pearlette Louisy.
Minister for Home Affairs and Internal Security, Senator the Honourable Calixte
George believes the public is impressed with the level of professionalism and
commitment displayed by fire officers: “I have no doubt those persons receiving
awards tonight are among many, who have worked very hard over the years to
ensure that the fire service provides an efficient and effective service of very
high quality to Saint Lucia. Your efforts I am sure have been
focussed, they have been consistent and industrious”.
Conspicuously absent from the wards ceremony were the Grenadian representatives,
who had earlier accepted an invitation for the occasion. A moment of silence was
observed in remembrance of the people and fire-fighters of Grenada, who earlier
this month suffered at the deadly passage of Hurricane Ivan.
Saturday’s event held at the Gaiety in Rodney Bay was the culmination of
activities throughout the month of September, marking the 30th Anniversary of
the Saint Lucia Fire and Ambulance Service.
