Monday, September 06, 2004 - The Ministry of Physical Development,
Environment and Housing is holding a workshop for health practitioners to raise
awareness of the link between climate factors and health.
The Ministry says this is a response to the findings of a survey conducted by
the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute which says climate factors are
linked to a number of diseases including dengue fever, asthma, and heart
disease.
The Environment ministry says critical to the findings is the discovery that
persons in the health sector are unaware of the link between climate factors and
health. According to the survey only 11% of medical personnel surveyed in Saint
Lucia was aware of the link, Barbados the other island in the survey fared
better with 23% of the respondents being aware of the link.
Sustainable Development and Environmental Officer Mr Crispin D’Auvergne says a
workshop is planned for Thursday September 16th at 8:45 in the morning at the
Bay Gardens Hotel. D’Auvergne says besides raising awareness the workshop will
clarify a protocol on outstanding issues related to proper record keeping.
