Friday, September 03, 2004 - The Office of the Prime Minister wishes to
announce the appointment of retired Justice of the OECS Supreme Court, Justice
Albert Matthew, to conduct the investigation into the circumstances relating to
the property at 438 East 49th Street, Brooklyn, New York, or what is commonly
referred to as the Helenites Building.
Justice Matthew is a regional legal luminary, having served as a High Court
Judge in Antigua, Dominica, St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Lucia and St Vincent with
specific assignments in Montserrat and Anguilla. During his tenure as a Justice
of Appeal of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, between 1997 and 2001 he wrote
several leading Judgments of the Court.
Since his retirement in August 2001, he has undertaken a Special Assignment in
the High Court of Justice in Tortola, B.V.I; Acted Chief Justice, Turks and
Caicos Islands.
In Dominica, at present, he serves as Chairman Education Appeal Tribunal;
Chairman Physical Planning Appeal Tribunal; Chairman Independent Monitoring
Group to monitor country’s performance under the Economic Stabilization
Programme.
Justice Matthew is currently a Member of the OAS Administrative Tribunal
