Monday, September 06, 2004 - The Government of Saint Lucia has challenged
internet provider Cable and Wireless (West Indies) Limited to ensure more is
done to give rural communities access to quality internet services.
Minister for Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities Honourable
Felix Finisterre says the internet is too important a tool to learning and
empowerment for some to be denied access because of the quality of the service
provided them.
Cable and Wireless recently launched a new internet delivery service XNET which
the company says will increase the capacity of business to be competitive as
well as decrease the cost to the customer.
Honourable Finisterre says any upgrade to the service which improves the quality
of the service and is competitively priced is good for the consumer but he says
it does not replace expanded access. The minister says the new upgrade in
internet serves those who already have superior service and does not cater to
customers out of the commercial north of the island and the city.
