Wednesday, September 08, 2004 – Managers and representatives of all radio
and television stations operating in St, Lucia will meet tomorrow Thursday
September 09th at the Cara Suites for a one-day national consultation on the
draft Broadcast Bill.
The draft Bill was prepared by the legal drafting facility at the Secretariat of
the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), and is aimed at modernising
the legal arrangements for the operations of broadcast systems in the Eastern
Caribbean islands. The draft proposes the establishment of a Broadcasting
Authority, procedures for applications for licenses and general provisions for
broadcasting.
Director of Information Services, Embert Charles, who will be chairing the
consultation has described the exercise as a very critical one for the eastern
Caribbean states, which are at present, faced with such issues as the
modernisation and liberalisation of telecommunications infrastructure, as well
as questions from consumers relating to media content.
The lead presentation will be made by a representative of the OECS legal
drafting facility. In addition to media managers, representatives are expected
from the Office of the Attorney General in Saint Lucia and the National
Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC).
The consultation is scheduled to start at 9.00 .a.m.
