Friday, October 29, 2004 - The St. Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority
(SLSWMA) today (Friday, October 29th) will launch the ‘Greening of the Schools’
programme. The programme will provide participating schools the opportunity to
develop methods for managing waste within their environment. The SLSWMA’s
Education and Public Information Manager, Emlyn Jean said the participation of
all schools was critical
“We know that the students can find very creative ways with respect to dealing
with waste in the schools. We are aware too, that the schools are one of the
areas that generate lots of waste, and very often sometimes, some of it can be
dealt with differently, instead of throwing it away, for example, Green waste
generated on the compound could actually be composted”, Ms. Jean said.
However she said that those programmes would be monitored throughout the course
of the school year, and hopefully, judged on World Environment Day on November.
The Greening of Schools Project is sponsored by the British High Commission.
