Monday, October 25, 2004 - As St. Lucia’s cultural, arts and
entertainment community continues to mourn the loss of Jany Williams, 2004
Calypso Queen.
The Folk Research Centre (FRC) has expressed condolence to the family of the 26-
year-old former school teacher. Jany Williams was down to perform at the FRC’s
Creole Tea Party on Sunday, October 24th, the very day that she was involved in
a fatal car accident on the West Coast Road.
Officer in Charge of the FRC, John Robert Lee said that the young calypsonian
and youth activist had left a legacy of positive memories for all who knew her:
“Jany Williams was a very wonderful young person, bright, vibrant, energetic
really everybody has been saying it from yesterday, very constructive, building,
bringing people together and her loss is being felt now. But for those of us who
believe that God takes care of all things, we hope that all is well with her
soul at this time.”
Meanwhile Mr. Lee recommended that priority be given to installing road barriers
at certain key points around the island, which are known for their dangerous
drops: “Canaries is notorious, we need road barriers, not only for St. Lucians,
but all the visitors we want to attract. It’s only God’s mercies that more
people don’t go over those cliffs. If you go around Castries, you drive down the
Morne, if you just make a quick sharp turn of your wheel, you could be over the
edge.”
