Thursday, October 21, 2004 - Minister for Tourism, Honourable Philip J. Pierre said that his recent election as First Vice Chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), was strategic in facilitating the full involvement of the Organization in the region’s preparations and hosting of the Cricket World Cup matches in 2007.

“The tourism industry is arguably, the largest sector in many of the islands and the CTO, being a regional organization, will have to work together with the World Cup Cricket Authorities so that the benefits that will accrue from the world Cup to the tourism industry can be maximised, because it is important that the World Cup Cricket 2007, apart from bringing the sport to the region, must bring benefits, and part of these benefits will be from the people who will come to view the matches from all over the world,” Minister Pierre said.

The First Vice Chairman of the CTO also saw the partnership of the 32-member CTO and its associates in the staging of the World Cup, as a means of ensuring that the event brings about a lasting economic afterglow to the region.

Minister Pierre was elected to the post at the 42nd Meeting of the Board of Directors of the CTO on October 17, 2004. He will hold the office for the next two years.
